The class will start this Monday 9/20/10 from 5:15 to 6:15. As realtors we work 7/24/365 and the stress level can be high.

A Realtor has to know just about everything when it comes to real estate laws, regulations, home inspections, environmental laws, zoning and planning for each county, town, subdivision, condo association, taxes, 1031 exchanges, short sales, foreclosures, lending laws and regulations, income producing properties, staging, personality types, and a lot more. I think you get my drift. Real Estate provides for flexibility and freedom, but at the same time a realtor must be available 24/7/365. Often you feel like there's never enough time in the day to get what you need or want done, much less exercise, spend time with family, or eat right. Not only do we have the need to be on top of current rules and regulations we have to provide utmost service with a SMILE. Buyers and sellers are putting their trust in you. You want to do the best job possible and make the home buying, or selling process, as smooth as possible. Service is number one, and clients NEED you.

The process can be trying and very stressful. Yoga helps us put everything in perspective and SLOW DOWN by using our breath and movement. It helps us become more aware of our crazy mind chatter and gets us grounded so we can think clearly and be in the best mental, emotional, and physical shape as possible for ourselves, our family, and our clients.

I look forward to helping my REMAX family get grounded and be the best all around realtors/people we can be.

Namaste
Heather

David Williams coming to the outer banks Aug. 11-15th.

I'm so excited we're having fellow UNC alumni and yogi, David Willimas, on the outer banks. Usually I'm traveling to all areas of the country for retreats, but now we have a well known teacher coming to the outer banks. I like David's philosophy. If it hurts you're doing it wrong...

Check out a little insert from his article by Cara Jepsen. Prana and Bhandas with David Williams...

‘If it hurts, you’re doing it wrong,’ he explained in his soft Southern drawl. ‘All this talk about openings is misleading and has the potential of leading to damage. Anything beyond stretching is tearing. I have yet to find any benefit from tearing oneself or being torn by others.
‘The purpose of yoga postures is to get yourself to basic wellness so your body is not an obstacle to meditation.’
The most powerful yoga David ever saw was in an 1939 film of Tirumalai Krishnamacharya (the teacher of Pattabhi Jois, Indra Devi, B.K.S. Iyengar and T.K.V. Desikachar). The venerable teacher was ‘as stiff as a board,’ he said. ‘But the power of his practice came through with his moolha bandha, breath control and focus.’ After seeing Krishnamacharya’s practice, David became more focused on increasing his core strength. He realized that ‘what’s important is what’s
invisible.’
David started practicing yoga while a student at the University of North Carolina. ‘I was fascinated with yoga,’ he said. ‘So, after graduation, I dropped everything and went to India’ in the summer of
1971. After visiting several ashrams, he and fellow Hawaii-based teacher Norman Allen saw Manju Jois and a friend demonstrating Ashtanga’s primary series at an ashram in South India. Enchanted,
they asked Manju if his father and teacher, Pattabhi Jois, would take them on as students. Manju said he didn’t know. David’s visa was about to expire, so he went home while Norman went to Mysore and persuaded Guruji to teach him. A few months later, David returned with Nancy Gilgoff, who also teaches in Maui. In those days, there was very little conversation with Guruji, who didn’t speak English. David learned by watching Guruji’s Indian students. ‘It was monkey-see, monkey-do,’ he said. ‘My goal was to learn eight postures a day’ and over the next four months he learned first and second series, half of third and pranayama.

Below is David's website and bio..
http://www.ashtangayogi.com/HTML/biog.html

If you're interested in attending check out the above link to Ashtanga Yoga Outer Banks Event page http://www.ashtangayogaobx.com/Events.html.

Come join us ...

NAMASTE
Heather

Nothing like grounding in your yoga practice!

When life throws you a curve ball, how do you react? After I go thru my range of emotions. I like, and NEED, to get back to my yoga practice. I need to get in tune with my ujaii breath and my grounding yoga postures, so I can let go of the outside world. When life thru me a curve ball this weekend a friend told me to find a quiet place to meditate and pray. Let go of all the mind chatter, breathe deeply and just sit. Sometime I find it hard to sit, so moving from yoga posture to yoga posture with focused deep breathing, tends to start my grounding. I can get out the physical angst, so I can then let go of the mental angst. I like doing my warrior postures and seeing my feet like suction cups attaching to the earth. I visualize myself as strong and steady, not fluctuating with the crazy mind chatter like a leaf in the wind.

I then sit in lotus, and see my sits bones growing roots attaching to the earth. I see my breath flowing from the belly to the top of the chest, and from the top of the chest back down to the belly, in a slow methodical pattern. The breath tends to calm the nervous system and clarity comes forth. I know that this too shall pass and I'm one in my foundation, and my truth. Peace starts to come forward and surround me in love.

If you're feeling stressed and can't seem to find peace. Why not take up a beginner yoga class?

Ever feel like you're out of sync? I have and do!!

I've been feeling out of sync in my Mysore morning practice, since our spring renewal retreat. I thought I was renewing, not letting go of my yoga practice? hee hee I hurt my back and had to lay low for a week. It's going on 3 weeks now, and I've yet to practice yoga. My friends know this is not like me, I'm usually addicted to my practice.

My real estate career has picked up, so I'm finding it hard to balance my family, my work, and my yoga practice. If I want to be successful, I have to prospect, follow up, be in the office, learn my statistics, and service my clients. There's simply not enough time in the day. It's hard to do this and find time for my family and my practice.I've started walking with my son Ike, and our dog Max in the mornings.

So what do you do if you're out of sync in your yoga practice, but feel more in sync in your life? I guess you breathe, and do what you need to do at that very moment. I know I'll get back to my practice, it may not be today or tomorrow, but it is there waiting for me.

Oh,how I love you yoga mat, I'm sorry I've neglected you day after day, week after week. I see you stare at me wondering when I'm going to join you in practice. I'm sorry dear yoga mat. I miss you and will find my way back to you soon.

I hope we're HOT VINYASA YOGA this Friday May 7th at 9am. Join me on Facebook or email me if you curious about Fri. class. Nature bursts forth with fresh abundance and a return to life after a period of darkness and an honoring of death. Freshness, renewal, and resurrection are the themes of this season.

Due to the positive feedback received after our last gathering on the New Year, we would like to gather again, this time to honor the changing of the season. An offering by Michelle Dorer, Todd Lazar, Heather VanderMyde and Janice Lane to help celebrate the coming of Spring and nurture yourself into your full bloom.

Michelle and Todd will be kicking it off with a group meditation and chanting. We had 3 2yr olds. I don't have first hand experience with that age, so to I was frightened. With the support of the other mommy's we got thru the uncharted waters together. Once I got out of the way of my thoughts I realized class flowed exactly how it was supposed to. It may seem chaotic at times, but those 2 yr. olds get it. They just don't want you to know they get it.

As you can imagine they have short attention spans, so you have to move quickly. We sing, dance, practice playful yoga poses, meditate, take mini savasana (very mini) and chant Om. Each child has their own independent personality and we encourage them to express it. I look forward to class next Friday. It's an adventure and I'm ready to play.

The children are learning tools that will help them for the rest of their lives. Especially the breathing. The breath is our life force and learning to focus on the inhales and exhales will help them stay grounded in stressful situations. Breathing calms the nervous system and teaches us to go inward. It helps us detach from our thoughts, and find our center. The 2 year olds reiterated this lesson for me. I had to stop worrying about how class was going, and let myself just go with the flow. Parenting is a ride of a lifetime. Our yoga practice mirrors our life, so coming to the mat with our children teaches us about ourselves and our parenting.

One of the mom's said that she was cooking dinner after class and her little boy started singing OMMMMMM. Thank you Dallas, Margie, and Amy for your support. I'm ready to do it again and bring Ike. We're going to have fun! I know we'll get thru class together. I attached a link to video of a little girl singing a song we sing in class. RUB YOUR HANDS.........

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTXaMzOvsh

With loving gratitude,
Heather

Infant and Tot yoga from OBX to Staunton... plus a special thank you to Shanti Om (Va) moms for our very first class!

The kind of lives we lead as children have a big impact on the kind of adults we become. How much mental stimulation we receive, how much physical activity we receive, and whether we have a good relationship with our parents all have an impact on who we become. I've been blessed to have a supportive group of moms for our Outer Banks Mommy and Me Infant Yoga class that started in November. We've learned a lot about not only our bodies, but our baby's bodies and personalities, and about our interaction as individuals, mother/child, and child/child. We're fostering a safe, compassionate, fun community with our babies and each other. Nothing like finding your tribe.

We also introduced our first Mommy and Me Infant class in Staunton Va at Shanti Om.http://www.shantiom.com/ last Sunday.Thank you Shanti Mama's! I try to help the mom relax, and be physically and mentally present with their babies. We do yoga exercises and massages for babes, stretches for mom, and sing songs to mentally engage them. The attention span is usually quite short, as you could imagine,so class can be pretty crazy. It's funny in both OBX and Staunton we have a baby that makes Tardactyl sounds. Too cute! They just scream out whenever they have something to say. There's also a social butterfly in each class who goes around to all the other mats and visits. I love teaching these classes b/c you not only learn about the babies and how they communicate with others, but also who you are as a mommy, and how you communicate with your baby. The mat is a mirror to our everyday lives.

This Friday we're starting our first Parent and Tot class at 11am at Ashtanga Center in Nags Head. 2 to 4 year olds. I'm very excited and can't wait to play on Friday! Thanks to all the prenatal students, the mom and infants, and the mom and tots from obx to staunton va for all your love and support! NAMASTE -Heather

I'm reading Bountiful, Beautiful and Blissful by Gurmukh. I loved seeing all the "Mums To Be" gracefully sit in prayer squats, flow thru cat and cow, torso circles, balancing poses, forward folds, and gentle back openers. These stretches help release tension in the back, shoulders, neck, hips, and hamstrings.I was pregnant just over a year ago, and yoga helped me center, breathe, gain body awareness, and stamina for labor.

In class we take time to connect with the baby, transferring nurturing and compassionate energy to the little being within. When I was pregnant with Ike yoga helped me release tension physically, which in turn helped me mentally submit to giving up control. Your body is changing constantly as the baby grows, so we have to LET GO and LET BE! Yoga helps you get through the whole process, and most importantly YOUR LABOR! Thanks to all my prenatal warroirs. You're very inspiring! Namaste my sweet ones! Molly wrote the concept of Parenting in the present moment means to pay careful attention to the present moment and ALL that's happening in it. Focusing on the moment at hand, instead of letting your mind drift to the past or future. Molly goes on to say that most of us spend our lives in a web of thoughts, instead of what's real in the present moment. When you have children practicing mindfulness gets a little harder. She said she found herself reacting in the heat of the moment and living out old behavior patterns of snippiness b/c she was too busy rushing around and not taking time for herself. Molly recommends the book Everyday Blessings- The Inner work of mindful parenting. Are you being present with your everyday life, or are you caught up in a web of racing thoughts. It sounds easy, but so hard to do. Molly says this book reminded her parenting and present moment practicing is not two separate things, but one in the same. It's not a philosophy...it's literally a survival tool.Taking time to be present in cleaning up the crumbs or changing the dirty diapers. She said that her children are her present moment teachers.

How beautiful.... our children are our present moment teachers. The author of Everyday Blessing writes "Our children can be seen as our live in teachers who provide us with ceaseless opportunities to do work of understanding who we are and who they are so that we can stay in touch with what is truly important and give them what they most need to grow and flourish. Molly said she began to see when she lost patience with her children it was usually b/c she was pre occupied. When she was in the present moment she noticed she had more patience. Are you parenting in the present moment?

AWESOME ARTICLE MOLLY!!! Thank you for bring this to my attention. I tried to share this in Mommy and Me Yoga class, but you say it so much better!

Happy Winter Solstice

My Ashtanga instructor,Michelle Dorer, sent out an "announcement" email and discussed the darkening days of Winter. Check out what she wrote below, it really touched me.

And, last but not least, I wanted to discuss the darkening days with you. The sun is moving to its furthest space away from the Earth it will be all year ! We are in the darkest days of the year right now. I realize this can be challenging. However, the beauty is that we are forced to go within to find the Light that is always burning and always available to sustain us. The Light is within ! An infinite Source is within us. If you have not been connecting throughout the year, the darkening of days will force you to this space.

Also, on the upside of this is that December 21 is the Winter Solstice. Which means it is the darkest day of the year. The good news is...after that the Sun is on the return journey ! Which means that every day after December 21 we get a little more sunlight and a little more sunlight ! Ashtanga is having a Winter Soltice Potluck Sunday 12/20 at 5:30pm. Children are welcome... Come celebrate!

I know this time of year can be especially hard for some people, so I've been using the "light within" theme in classes. (thanks for being the inspiration Michelle)No matter what is going on in our outside world, darkness, chaos, or stress, we ALWAYS have the light within. Connecting to that light is imperative on these darker days especially. Are you connected to your light and are you letting it shine? To get connected,it helps me to sit in stillness and imagine breathing warm white light into my center, and out. Then breathing from my center to each specific body part, and back to my center. I try to imagine and feel that light spreading throughout every nook and cranny back to my center. (janice, thanks for your nurturing). This helps bring me to stillness while connecting with my inner light. As we sing in Mommy and Me class..... This little light of mine, I'm going to let it shine, this little light of mine, I'm going to let it shine, let it shine, let it shine, let it shine. Take advantage of these short daylight hours, and let YOUR light shine brighter than ever. Happy Winter Solstice. We start class with an introduction. Mom's tell what babies have done new, and how THEY'RE doing. Ila, who's 9 months, started walking this week, Austin is trying to say Ba--- all or alloon, Ike is laughing at FB birthday pix of himself, Joel is rolling over from back to belly, Josie clapped for the first time, Gavin was fascinated with the Christmas tree, and Henry( or was it C) is waving. Sorry Mom's, it's hard to remember everything with the craziness. It was nice having some new students- C,Joel, and Adlay. Henry got in another tackle this week, this time with Heidi instead of Josie. hee hee

Today was different than most days, the babies (as a group) seemed extra emotional. Of course some were great, but some were extra sensitive and needy. I think something is in the air. I know my Monday adult yoga class was extra emotional (including me), and now seeing the babies it makes me wonder what's going on. :) As always though, by the end of class I think everyone was excited and relieved to be together and to wear the babies out! Several mom's reported that as soon as they got home the babies took extra long naps. I know Ike did!!! Thank goodness...

Until next week.......

Namaste

Mommy and Me Yoga Class 12/2

I love Mommy and Me Yoga Class. I'm learning the personalities of each baby as well as the group. Today was small, but intimate, with some babies and moms at home sick. We usually start the class with the sound of chimes and the babies hush immediately. We chant 3 Om's and they look around with up most curiosity. I think this is the quietest we EVER see them during class. Sometimes I wonder if we should just chant Om and ring the chimes the entire hour. Today was an especially good day, we were able to do a little more stretching while the babies just hung out. Sweet Josie loves putting the chimes in her mouth and hearing the mommy's sing Itsy Bitsy Spider, Henry likes giving other babies a big bear hug and giggles with glee as his mommy holds him in a stretch. Gavin is Mr. Mellow complying to all the stretching with joy, Nicholas loves the hoops and playing with his mommy as she leans in and kisses his tummy. Austin has the biggest blue eyes and makes the funniest faces while watching us do our sun salutations, hearing the chimes, and playing with the hula hoops. Savasana is not the normal corpse pose, instead it's free time while mommy's share. I've tried to suggest cuddling with the babes while lying down, but no baby is ready to submit and be quiet! They've been stimulated with songs, movement, sounds, and other babies, so forget that idea. boo hoo... no cuddles during class... Class is always different, with no real plan. As with parenting... you go with the flow and practice patience. Thanks for your support and see you next Wednesday! Namaste my friends...
